Where Does Bayou Sleep? — Our First Sleep Story
Our first sleep story is out now. Named after our dog Bayou, who passed away June 20, 2023 — the same day we found out we were having a daughter.
Our first sleep story is out on all streaming platforms, and it's a personal one.
Who was Bayou
Bayou was our dog. Big black dog with tan paws, tan eyebrows, and a white chest with small black spots. Labrador build, Rottweiler coloring, and the kind of dog who figured out he could open doors with his nose and used that skill constantly.
He passed away on June 20, 2023.
The same day he was cremated, we found out we were having a daughter.
While we were on the phone with the OB getting the news we got two separate flower deliveries — both for him. And somehow, in the middle of all of it, it felt less like grief and more like something being handed off. Like he was giving us the flowers himself, one step ahead of us like he always was.
We've wanted to do something for him for a long time, and have more planned ahead.
The story
Where Does Bayou Sleep? follows a big black dog trying every spot in the house — the sofa, the big bed, his own dog bed, the armchair, the warm patch by the heater — before finding the right place. The foot of the child's bed. Where it's warm, and safe, and smells exactly right.
The story ends the way all the best bedtime stories do: the dog closes his eyes, and so do you.
We wrote it for kids, but honestly we wrote it for us too.
Where to listen
Where Does Bayou Sleep? is out now on all major streaming platforms under DouGina — we may make a new channel called DouGinaSleeps in the future.
Goodnight, Bayou.
